In mid-2026, rumors emerged that Anthropic is discussing with Samsung the creation of its own specialized AI chip. According to information published by The Information on July 2, the talks are at an early stage — the parties are only looking into a joint project. This is not the first such signal: back in April, Reuters reported that Anthropic was considering releasing its own AI processors to reduce dependence on scarce solutions on the market.
What is known about the future chip
At this point, the project has more questions than answers. Anthropic itself has not disclosed the chip's purpose, how it will be integrated into server infrastructure, or its target performance. Apparently, the company has not even settled on basic parameters — the talks are at the stage of "possible collaboration" rather than an approved plan.
In an official comment to TechCrunch, Anthropic emphasized that its bet on a diversified hardware stack — chips from Google, Amazon, and Nvidia — remains key to its computing strategy. They did not add anything specific about a possible partnership with Samsung. This can be read as a cautious hint: its own chip, if it materializes, will complement the existing ecosystem rather than replace current suppliers.
Why this is happening now
Notably, the announcement almost coincided with an aggressive move by a competitor. A week earlier, OpenAI, together with Broadcom, presented its own inference processor Jalapeño Jalapeño, claiming its superiority in performance per watt. In light of such a statement, Anthropic clearly does not want to stand aside and appear dependent on others' chips — even if its own project so far exists more as an idea.
At the same time, Samsung already has all the necessary expertise and scale to participate in such projects. The company has long been a major Nvidia partner: it produces chips for training and running AI models, uses Nvidia software in its own manufacturing, and is also building an AI chip factory in South Korea together with Nvidia. In addition, Samsung has also held chip talks with Google. So a potential alliance with Anthropic logically fits into Samsung's strategy of expanding cooperation with AI developers.
What this means for the market
If the deal goes through, Anthropic will get not just guaranteed volumes of chips, but also the ability to influence their architecture for its models. For Samsung, such a contract is another way to establish itself as one of the leading producers of AI hardware, and in several camps at once.
For now, everything is still at the negotiation stage, and this news should be treated as an indicator of direction rather than a finished product. A proprietary chip is an expensive and lengthy project, even for a company of Anthropic's caliber.
